Your brain holds a detailed map of your body, a remarkable function known as proprioception. This is the brain’s ability to sense the position, movement, and orientation of different body parts without you having to look. Information from receptors in your skin, muscles, and joints is sent to the brain, forming a map in a region called the Homunculus. The more frequently you use a particular area of your body, the more refined and detailed that map becomes.
Why Proprioception Matters
Ever rolled your ankle while walking and wondered why? One possible reason is reduced proprioception. If your brain isn’t fully aware of your foot’s position on uneven ground or how to react to sudden shifts, it won’t respond quickly enough to activate the right muscles to stabilise you increasing the risk of a sprain or injury.
How to Check Your Proprioception
Test your balance and proprioception with these simple exercises. Compare your ability on each leg:
- Stand on one leg with your eyes open. How long can you hold it?
- Now, close your eyes. Notice any difference?
- Repeat both exercises standing on a pillow. Does it change your balance?
- Try with eyes closed on the pillow. How steady are you?
If one side struggles more than the other, it could indicate reduced proprioception.
How to Improve Proprioception
The most effective way to enhance proprioception is through targeted exercises that retrain the brain’s awareness of your body. This involves:
- Strengthening specific muscles
- Correcting movement patterns
- Improving body awareness
Think of it like learning to drive — it requires focus at first, but with repetition, movements become automatic.
