Winter is just around the corner and many of us are now thinking about purchasing a warm pair of UGGs. We all have a love hate relationship with them. They are warm and cosy yet they make our feet work hard when we walk and may cause us pain.
We all know that UGGs do not provide any support or stability around the ankle and our feet tend to role in. Wearing UGGs is like sleeping in a soft bed, it is initially comfortable when you get into it, however the following morning you wake up with an achy back.
With each step we take wearing UGGs, there are forces placed upon the inside of our foot, which can impact on our biomechanics and our kinetic chain. Our feet also tend to sweat in such heat causing a build up of bacteria and fungus.
Wearing UGGs can bring on foot pain from the achilles tendon or plantar fascia being strained causing achilles, tendinopathies and plantar fasciitis. It can also cause or aggravate shin splints, and may bring on knee and back pain.
For those of us who are in love with fashion and are adamant to wear our UGGs my suggestions are:
- Buy an arch support from your local chemist
- Don’t wear them all day every day.
