What does a home visiting physiotherapist do?

Home visit physiotherapy is great for those who need physiotherapy but are not mobile enough or are not able to get to appointments. At Home Physio Group we offer a home visit physiotherapy service which can be especially helpful for you, if you are having difficulty with day-to-day activities such as walking, climbing stairs or getting into and out of bed. Whether you are suffering from balance problems, have had falls or a recent operation we can help improve strength, balance, mobility and confidence around the home and outdoors. Our aim is to get you back to doing the things you love and enable you to live your life as fully as possible.

Our physiotherapists can also manage any problems you have with acute pain. Acute pain is temporary pain caused by injury such as neck, shoulder or back pain. Your treatment plan for acute pain may include manual therapy, assisted stretching, acupuncture amongst others. Exercise is good for many musculoskeletal pain conditions but needs to be targeted to your problem. Our physiotherapists are skilled in assessing and treating these temporary and acute painful conditions caused by injury.

What does a home visit involve?

As well as taking some personal details such as date of birth, address and contact information, medical history and reason for treatment, an initial appointment can then be arranged with one of our specialist case managers.

Therapists will wear a face mask before entering the house and may ask to wash their hands at your sink or will use their own alcohol gel.

The first appointment can take up to one hour and following a comprehensive assessment, hands-on treatments can be administered in your home if needed. This can include massage and joint mobilisations which can be used as part of promoting your recovery. Other possible treatments include dry needling and acupuncture, TENS therapy, taping, stretching and exercise, rehabilitation and hot/cold applications.

The physiotherapist will ensure that you receive a tailored rehabilitation programme with individualised advice and a clear plan for moving forward with attainable goals.

Visits to the home can also be helpful in providing a risk assessment and advice to make the home environment safer especially after a fall. We can provide ergonomic advice to help make daily tasks easier to do. Sometimes something as simple as having someone present to increase confidence around getting out and about outdoors again can be life changing and really help boost confidence.

Our physiotherapists can ensure the visits are fitted around the individual and relatives or spouses can be present as often their input and help is valuable. In some cases we can help teach relatives techniques and exercise programmes that will help aid a person’s recovery or ongoing maintenance.
