Have you recently suffered a stroke? Or do you suffer from a neurological condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or a Spinal Cord Injury? These neurological conditions cause damage to the brain, resulting in difficulties with motor control, coordination, balance, cognition and speech and much more. They can be very debilitating for patients and can affect both mental and physical health.
How does Neuro Physio Help?
Neurological Physiotherapy supports patients with rehab after stroke and may slow down the progression of some neurological diseases. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to form new connections between neurons when pathways have been damaged by disease. Through targeted physiotherapy, patients can stimulate their brain to create new neurological connections and rewire itself. This results in an improvement physically as well as enhancing cognition.
In some cases, such as a complete Spinal Cord transection, it is not possible to regenerate pathways, however Physiotherapy prevents development of contractures, maintains tissue and muscle length and has a positive impact on prevention of pressure areas. Therapy support also maintains good alignment and therefore a stable posture, where possible and reduces the onset of postural change which impacts internal organs and may reduce life expectancy.
How do patients achieve their goal?
Each patient will have their own individual goals so every person will have their individualised treatment plan. Goals can be small and achievable relatively quickly, such as maintaining control of a position, to longer term goals, such as achieving an independent transfer or improvements in gait. The Physiotherapist will be able to offer guidance and support with reducing energy expenditure of some tasks, therefore making it easier to move about. If the person has mobility issues, the Physiotherapist will be able to support with advice around positioning to enable comfort and prevent complications with joints and muscle length. Patient education is always in the fore of a therapist’s intervention, so the person becomes better able to manage their health and wellbeing.
How our physios can help you
Physiotherapists can help you achieve your own realistic goals by providing you with expert advice and specific exercises you can do, within your ability, to gradually improve. They will also provide you with motivation to carry on doing these exercises on days where motivation is low. They will know how much to push your limits and challenge you, without going too far which will also boost your mental health.
If you have sustained a stroke, targeted intervention is invaluable in helping you maximise your input towards recommended therapy times. The chances of recovery are maximised if there are frequent therapy sessions aimed at rehabbing both mobility goals but also targeted function of muscle groups. As more control of movement is achieved, then mobility goals are more easily attained.
